Its thick, spiny appearance and caudex make it a prized specimen for succulent enthusiasts and collectors.

As it matures, the plant develops an irregularly swollen base, with a green and brown layered surface. The branches, which are covered in leaves, have characteristic woody spines that are very hard, giving the plant a rugged, wild beauty.
