Lophophora fricii

Family: Cactaceae  | Lophophora

Native northern Mexico

Features: Lophophora fricii has a larger growth form compared to "Lophophora williamsii." Its stems have a slightly powdery appearance with shades of gray-green or gray-blue, and the hair-like appendages on the areoles are more pronounced. The stems of Lophophora fricii often display a powdery substance resembling white powder. This plant is less likely to produce lateral shoots and is typically found as a single spherical shape. Seedlings have prominent main roots, and hair-like appendages grow on the areoles. The flowers are primarily peach or pink, but there are also white-flowered variants. The flowering period typically occurs in the spring and summer. It is valued for its ornamental and economic significance.

Distinguishing between Lophophora fricii and Lophophora williamsii

  • Crown Features: The most apparent difference lies in their crown features. The crown of Lophophora fricii is typically described as a "silver crown," with multiple protrusions encircling the top of the stem, resembling a crown. In contrast, Lophophora williamsii (Peyote) has a crown that is usually smoother, with a single small projection, which doesn't resemble a crown.
  • Stem Shape: The stems of Lophophora fricii may be slightly flattened, while those of Lophophora williamsii are more spherical.
  • Flower Color: Although not an absolute rule, Lophophora fricii flowers tend to be light red or pink, while Lophophora williamsii commonly has white flowers.
  • Distribution Area: Lophophora fricii is primarily found in specific regions of Mexico, while Lophophora williamsii has a broader distribution, including Mexico and the southwestern United States.
